The frequency of ASD is greater among Asian, Black, and Hispanic youths compared to white youths, who traditionally have experienced superior admittance to diagnostic services.

A novel finding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that the occurrence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the U.S. has reached an unprecedented level. Nonetheless, the elevated figure is potentially as a result of improved screening and diagnosis, as opposed to a surge in new instances, the research implies.

In the course of 20 years of observation for the first time, the proportion of 8-year-old girls identified with ASD went past 1%, whereas it stayed around 4% for boys.

The report, issued on March 24, likewise determined for the first time that the prevalence of ASD in Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander youths has surpassed that in white youths, who historically have been privileged with superior admittance to evaluations and diagnoses.

Although ASD prevalence in white youths rose by 14.6% from 2018 to  2020, it experienced growth exceeding 30% in Asian, Black, and Hispanic 8-year-olds. According to the report, this considerable escalation within those demographics is attributable to enhanced screening, increased awareness, and better admittance since 2018.

The National Institute of Mental Health characterizes ASD as a developmental illness that has an effect on the brain and influences how individuals engage socially, convey thoughts, learn, and act.

To determine the estimated count of youths diagnosed with ASD, the ADDM Network surveyed 8-year-old children identified with either an ASD diagnosis by a certified expert, a special education designation of autism in public education, or an administrative record of ASD conforming to the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases.

ASD prevalence among youths has seen a notable incline during the past two decades. As emphasized by the ADDM Network, while merely 6.7 children per 1,000 fulfilled criteria for an ASD diagnosis, that figure increased to 23 in 2018 and 27.6 in the present report.

Black youths identified with ASD demonstrated a heightened probability of having further intellectual impairments, such as those associated with genetic predispositions or congenital anomalies, when contrasted with their white counterparts.

The present prevalence could be a diminished representation, as indicated in the report. COVID-19, along with ensuing lockdowns, obstructed admittance to some services, likely leading to a reduced recording of ASD cases.

“In the early phases of the pandemic, 4-year-old youths were less prone to undergo assessment or be identified with ASD compared to 8-year-old youths when they were at an equivalent developmental stage. This synchronizes with the breaks in childcare and healthcare offerings amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” CDC officials indicated in a statement.
