The family of 26-day-old twins who were mauled to death by a 'jealous' Labrador say missing them will 'hurt their hearts forever'.

Twin girls, Anne and Analu, were attacked by their family dog in a room they were sleeping in at home in Piripa, Brazil.

Local reports say their mum Elaine Novais heard the sound of the attack as she spoke to a neighbour outside – before running to rip the dog off her daughters and calling an ambulance.

After both girls tragically died from their injuries, their aunt Jade Novais paid a heartbreaking tribute to them, describing the "nightmare" the family are going through.

She wrote: "My princesses, your aunt writes now with tears in her eyes for remembering everything we experienced so far and the nightmare we are living at this monent.

"It's been little more than 26 days since our story stated…we lived out most beautiful days in those 26 days.

"You guys warmed our hearts so much, we care for you so much, but unfortunately tragedies happen that we can't explain.

"There are no words that comfort in a moment of so much pain, a pain that I wish on no one…it's so much pain that it doesn't even fit inside us.

"You guys made me the happiest person in the whole world. I love you the size of the universe, infinite and infinite times and it will forever be like this.

"Missing you will hurt our hearts every day, but the certainty that you are in a beautiful place, free from all the evil in the world."

The girls were given first aid by people who first came to help mum Elaine at the scene before being taken to Maria Pedreira Barbosa Municipal Hospital.

One girl was sadly declared dead on arrival, whilst another was in a serious condition.

Despite medics' best efforts, they were unable to save her and she too died.

The doctor at the hospital who was responsible for Elaine during her pregnancy said the mother had always shown adequate care for her babies.

An unnamed family member told local media the dog – believed to be a Labrador cross –  was normally docile.

"We think that with the birth of the twins, the animal was left out in a way, and it no longer had the attention and affection of its owners provided before.

"That could have caused some kind of jealousy and led the dog to attack the children."

It is unclear what has happened to the dog after the attack.
