For the first time, scientists were able to record in real time the process of implantation of a human embryo into a laboratory model of the uterus.

Researchers believe that being able to observe this complex implantation process could help improve fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

“We have seen human embryos enter the uterus with considerable force,” said study co-author Samuel Ojosnegros, lead researcher in the Bioengineering for Reproductive Health Group at the Instituto de Bioengineering de Catalunya (IBEC) in Spain. “It’s a surprisingly invasive process.”
