Infectious disease expert explains what germs might lurk in pools and how to avoid them

On warm summer days, nothing compares to the pleasure of swimming in a pool. But have you ever wondered how clean the water in the pool actually is, which looks crystal clear?

As an immunologist and infectious disease expert, I research how germs spread in public places and how to prevent them. I also teach a course called Leisure Infections, where we look at the risks associated with leisure activities and discuss precautions to avoid oversensitizing students to germs.

Swimming, especially in public pools and water parks, carries its own risks, from mild skin irritations to gastrointestinal infections. However, swimming also offers many physical, social, and mental health benefits. With some knowledge and vigilance, you can enjoy the water without worrying about what might be lurking beneath the surface.
