A new document says a salmonella outbreak that has affected more than 160 people in California and several in other states was caused by raw milk products from a single dairy farm.

The outbreak, mentioned Thursday (July 24) in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, occurred from September 2023 to March 2024. The California Department of Public Health was notified of the outbreak when nine people became ill after consuming a certain brand of raw milk produced on the same farm. That led to an investigation by state and federal authorities.

The outbreak stands out because it was “one of the largest outbreaks of foodborne illness associated with raw milk consumption in recent U.S. history,” the report’s authors note. Between 2009 and 2021, there were 16 salmonella outbreaks associated with raw milk, and these cases were relatively small, with the number of cases ranging from two to 33.
