A new lab study has shown that the popular no-calorie sweetener erythritol can harm cells lining blood vessels in the brain.
This raises concerns about whether the sweetener could increase the risk of stroke, but experts warn that more research is needed to see how these findings might relate to human health.
“This study was conducted under controlled conditions in isolated cells, not in a whole-animal setting,” said Amy Reichelt, a nutritional neuroscientist at the University of Adelaide in Australia who was not involved in the study. “Therefore, the actual physiological health effects in humans in the context of a typical diet remain uncertain,” Reichelt told Live Science in an email.
