Toddler dies after being run over by father in freak holiday accident in Spain

The 18-month-old boy died after his father reversed his 4×4 from a rented villa. He was rushed to hospital but died shortly after arrival in what the town mayor described as ‘devastating and tragic’

    A toddler has died after being run over by his father in a freak accident on holiday in Spain.

    The tragedy is understood to have happened as the unnamed driver reversed in his 4×4 from a rented holiday villa in Conil de la Frontera near Cadiz in Spain.

    The family had been staying there with friends.

    The boy’s father rushed him to a medical centre where he was transferred to nearby Puerto Real Hospital but died shortly after arrival.

    A local police investigation is underway into the incident, which happened late Friday morning in an area of Conil called El Colorado which consists mainly of country and holiday homes and some shops.

    The youngster was pronounced dead around 4pm yesterday.

    Town mayor Juan Manuel Bermudez described what had happened as “devastating and tragic.”

    The four-year-old Belgian boy was found in the water shortly after his parents made a stopover at a relative’s house in the Brit-popular area of Ciudad Quesada near Torrevieja.

    His family had only arrived hours earlier and were due to stay the night before continuing to Castellon further north.

    Local reports said one one of his relatives, described as a nurse, jumped into the pool to pull him out and emergency responders spent nearly 45 minutes trying to revive him without success.

    The previous Wednesday a Dutch girl also aged four drowned at a pool in Calpe north of Benidorm.

    She reportedly ended up in the pool after going outside while her mum was looking after her younger sibling.
