Because eating cannabis brownies or gummies doesn't involve inhaling smoke, it may be tempting to think of these edibles as relatively safe treats. However, new research suggests that, like smoking cannabis, consuming edibles containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may have negative effects on cardiovascular health over time.

The study found that “chronic marijuana users have inefficient blood vessels similar to those seen in chronic tobacco smokers,” said Matt Springer, a cardiovascular researcher at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), whose lab conducted the new study. “THC products also appear to be associated with this problem.”

The study's findings, published May 28 in the journal JAMA Cardiology, may challenge popular beliefs about marijuana's health effects.
