Disease name: Hantavirus infection
Affected populations: Hantavirus disease is a rare but potentially life-threatening respiratory illness caused by a family of viruses known as hantaviruses. These viruses, found throughout the world, are typically carried and transmitted by rodents such as rats and mice.
From 1993 to 2022, 864 cases of hantavirus infection were reported in the United States. The largest number of cases were recorded in New Mexico – 122, followed by Colorado (119) and Arizona (86).
