The mosaic dates back to the Byzantine period between 324 and 638 CE. It consists of 55 carefully decorated medallions depicting mythical characters, hunting scenes, exotic animals, baskets of fruit and other scenes from everyday life.
Shaike Lender, an archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), said in a statement released by Israel's Foreign Ministry: “The mosaic was clearly created by a true master,” as it consists of “small mosaic stones of various colors combined with glass and ceramics, giving it variety.”
Experts from the Israel Antiquities Authority have spent the past several months restoring the ancient mosaic.
