Public DomainRichard Ramirez as a teenager. By this time, he had already developed an interest in Satanism, drugs, and violence.

Born February 29, 1960, Richard Ramirez spent his youth in El Paso, Texas. He claimed that his father physically abused him and that he suffered multiple head injuries as a child. One of the injuries was so severe that it reportedly caused him to have epileptic seizures.

To escape his abusive father, Ramirez often found himself in the company of his older cousin Miguel, a Vietnam veteran. Unfortunately, Miguel's influence was not much better than his father's.

During his service in Vietnam, Miguel raped, tortured, and even dismembered several women. Moreover, he had photographic evidence of his deeds and often showed “Little Richie” the horrific pictures he had taken.

When Ramirez was just 13 years old, he witnessed his cousin murder his own wife. Soon after, Ramirez began to transform from a frightened, humiliated boy into a hardened, sullen young man.
