The shipwreck of the Dmitry Donskoy and the 200 tons of gold said to be there

An international team of experts has discovered the Russian warship Dmitry Donskoy, which reportedly sank with 5,500 boxes of gold bars on board.

Shinil GroupPhotographs of the wreckage of Dmitry Donskoy.

“The ship's hull was seriously damaged by the shelling, its stern was almost destroyed, but the deck and sides of the ship were in good condition,” Shinil Group said in a statement.

The Dmitry Donskoy was built in St. Petersburg and launched in August 1883. Originally designed as a merchant raider, it was primarily used in the Mediterranean and the Far East.

The ship was intended to protect transport ships that followed in the rearguard during the Battle of Tsushima, which took place in May 1905.

Of the 591 crew members, about 60 were killed and 120 wounded before the captain dropped anchor off Ulleungdo Island and ordered his men ashore. The ship was allegedly scuttled the next morning, and Japanese landing forces captured the remaining crew.

Shinil Group said it plans to raise the ship in October or November and hand over half of the gold found on board to Russia.

Did the Dmitry Donskoy really have that much gold?
