His appreciative family depicted his recovery as wondrous, affording him the opportunity to observe his 40th birthday and to be available for the advent of his third child. Sarbjit began feeling chest discomfort in the early hours of November 26, 2020, prompting his wife, Raj Kaur, who was five months pregnant, to contact emergency services.
Regrettably, Sarbjit underwent cardiac arrest on four separate instances.
The cessation of breathing and heart function, which hinders the circulation of blood to essential organs, is the criteria that defines clinical death. Birmingham City Hospital expressed that the “ultimate option” intervention arose due to the determination shown by the attending physicians.
The medical professionals dedicated the entire 45 minutes relentlessly attempting to bring him back, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. As they were on the verge of declaring his passing, cardiologist Dr. Arijit Ghosh proposed employing an innovative and drastic procedure he had recently studied, referred to as double sequential external defibrillation.
This includes using a pair of defibrillators – one positioned on the patient’s chest and the other on their back – with shocks administered successively at the strongest intensity.
“I was simply astounded by everything he did for me,” shared the patient hailing from Great Barr, concerning his physician. Sarbjit reunited with his doctor, who remarked that it was the father’s “mental fortitude which carried [him] throughout this arduous journey”.
Sarbjit remained critically unwell for a period and underwent rapid surgery to eliminate a blood clot and was then put into a medically induced coma after enduring substantial organ trauma.
