The eruption of the Klyuchevskoy volcano in eastern Russia began shortly after a strong magnitude 8.8 earthquake, which was followed by several additional tremors in the same area.
“On the western slope, a slide of hot lava is observed,” the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported in a notice on the Telegram messenger, published on Wednesday (July 30).
The Kamchatka branch of the academy recorded the eruption on video while monitoring the volcano. In their Telegram post, they mentioned that they noticed “explosions” in the form of “an intense glow above the volcano.”
