A volcanic eruption has caused lava to spill out of a huge crack in the Sundhnukur crater in Iceland.

The crack was caused by a series of earthquakes on Wednesday (July 16), according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO).

Iceland's Civil Protection Department posted dramatic aerial images of the eruption on Facebook, showing lava gushing out of a fissure, creating a wall of fire and flooding the surrounding area.
