Americans are convinced Brits are washing up ‘wrong’

An American TikTok user has gone viral after admitting she’d gone down a ‘strange rabbit hole’ of learning how Brits do washing up

An American TikTok user has admitted she’s been left baffled by the method Brits use for washing up after going down a “strange rabbit hole” of videos on the platform.

The woman, who uses the TikTok handle @spirtual_af, asked people in the UK to record videos of themselves cleaning the dishes in order to provide her with “confirmation or denial” of what she witnessed. “Can you show the steps you take to take a dish from dirty to clean please?” she requested.

The clip, which has been viewed a staggering 4.8 million times in little over a week saw thousands flock to the comments section to suggest Brits are doing things all wrong by allowing the pots to dry without rinsing bubbles off. Americans also expressed disbelief at carrying out the task in bowls of “dirty water”.

“I truly hope i didnt see what I think I saw,” the woman said, before inviting others to respond. “Im from the UK, can an American give an explanation?” asked one Brit in response, oblivious like many others to the apparent problem. “I’m so confused as to what can be confusing about washing dishes.”

It soon became apparent what issue had riled those users across the pond, however. “Are people not running the tap?” asked one confused American TikTok user. “Why are people washing up in a bowl of dirty water?” Another conccurred: “Why don’t they rinse the soap off?”

A third penned: “American living in the UK here. This is about leaving the soap on, isn’t it. Yes. They do. If I’m staying with Brits and they’ve done the dishes, I sneak in later and rinse everything.”

Whilst a Brit attempted to provide some sort of clarity, adding: “I’m from the UK. I think the people who dont wash the suds off are the ones who dry the items with a tea towel after before putting them away.”

Others, meanwhile, stood firm claiming there is no issue with the British technique. “I will never ever understand the confusion about this,” one TikTok user slammed. “I have never rinsed dishes and my food has never tasted soapy, any remaining suds just drip off the dishes like the water does.”

A second person agreed: “I only rinse if I wash and want to use it straight away, otherwise I wash and let dry. Never hurt me or anyone else I know.” And third echoed the sentiment: “I will never ever understand the confusion about this. I have never rinsed dishes and my food has never tasted soapy, any remaining suds just drip off the dishes like the water does.”

@spirtual_af later returned to TikTok with a follow-up video, admitting her shock at the “chaos” that had ensued from her original clip. “Brits are so cute when they go feral,” she said in a caption, before elaborating.

“I did not expect me asking British people to wash their dishes would cause so much chaos. It’s absolute chaos in this comments section and I’m in stitches right now.”
