Braintraser: Spot the ants in under 15 seconds

Brainteasers can act like exercise for the mind and give it some gentle neurological stimulation.

Brainteasers are a fantastic way of stimulating the mind and giving the brain a significant dose of fun and engaging exercise.

While there are many types of brain puzzles including crosswords and sudoku, the most common quick types are known as observational, analytical, and mathematical brainteasers.

Mathematical brainteasers come as tricky maths-based puzzles, while analytical brainteasers are fiddly word-based puzzles. In both cases, the user has to try and answer them as quickly as possible.

The brainteaser above is known as an observational brainteaser. It starts with a jumbled-up and complex image and it is the job of the player to find the anomaly within.

In this brainteaser from Betway, the user’s task is to try and find the ants in this picnic scene as quickly as possible.

Did you spot the ant in under 15 seconds? No worries if not, the answer is circled above with the ants in the bottom of the image.

Brainteasers such as this one are a gentle way to engage the brain and act like exercise for the mind in the same way that walking or jogging does to gently exercise the muscles in the arms and legs.

This light mental exercise can help contribute to neurological health and the healthier the mind is the less likely it is to develop a neurological condition such as dementia or Parkinson’s disease.

This doesn’t mean brainteasers can stop someone from developing either of those conditions, other risk factors can have a much bigger impact, but they could help keep the mind sharper for longer.

Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating condition that as yet has no cure. There are a handful of treatments to slow its onset so the key is for someone to be diagnosed as early as possible after they start developing potential symptoms.

In recent weeks there has been a new breakthrough as artificial intelligence has helped develop a new blood test that could predict the condition seven years before symptoms begin.

Speaking about the breakthrough, senior author of the study, UCL’s Professor Kevin Mills said: “As new therapies become available to treat Parkinson’s, we need to diagnose patients before they have developed the symptoms. We cannot regrow our brain cells and therefore we need to protect those that we have.

“At present, we are shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted and we need to start experimental treatments before patients develop symptoms.

“Therefore, we set out to use state-of-the-art technology to find new and better biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease and develop them into a test that we can translate into any large NHS laboratory. With sufficient funding, we hope that this may be possible within two years.”
