Earl Grey is a tea often enjoyed as part of an afternoon spread, but people are only just realising that too much of it can cause some strange side effects.
Tea is a staple in British culture, with Brits consuming some 100 million cups daily, as reported by the UK Tea and Infusions Association. With around 1,500 varieties to choose from, there’s something for everyone.
Earl Grey, often savoured during afternoon tea, has an interesting history. It’s believed that a Chinese mandarin tea master first blended it as a gift for Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl of Grey and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834.
But did you know excessive consumption of this popular tea could lead to ‘intoxication?’.
The X (formerly Twitter) account Quite Interesting, from the team behind the hit BBC show QI, recently revealed: “Drinking over 16 cups (4 litres) of Earl Grey tea a day leads to muscle cramps and blurred vision. It’s known as ‘Earl Grey Intoxication’.”
WebMD explains this phenomenon is likely due to the bergamot in Earl Grey tea, which can interfere with potassium channels causing cells to overreact to stimulus, leading to muscle spasms and cramps.

Additionally, the tea contains a significant amount of caffeine, which can exacerbate anxiety, disrupt sleep, and is commonly linked to depression.
Social media users were shocked by the revelation, while some joked they would never breach the 16-cup mark. One man humorously commented on the X thread that this would “only happen in the UK”, while another quipped: “Well, thank God I only drink 15 cups.”

One tea enthusiast responded: “I can do half that on a hot / hangover day, but 16 cups is crazy.”
Meanwhile, someone else decided to share an enlightening definition of ‘intoxication’, saying: “A good reminder that the literal meaning of ‘intoxication’ is not ‘drunk’ but rather ‘toxins have gotten inside you’.”
