Mount Etna erupted Monday (June 2), sending a torrent of molten material down the volcano's slope and a huge, dark cloud of ash high into the skies above Sicily. Live Science has rounded up the best photos and videos of the event.

Initially, news reports said that this was Etna's most significant eruption since 2014, but INVG experts soon clarified that this was not the case and that the eruption should be considered a “medium-sized eruption.”

The Italian volcano, which is the largest active volcano in Europe, has been erupting on and off for centuries, according to the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program. The current period of eruptions began on November 27, 2022.
