Fishing is a cherished activity for many individuals, be it a weekend pleasure or a lifelong vocation. The anticipation of patiently waiting near the shore or waterside for a nibble, along with the happiness of reeling in a sizable prize, are elements of its attraction.

Nonetheless, any experienced fisherman will inform you of the annoyance of assuming you’ve caught a fish, only to pull in a mass of algae alternatively.

Recently, a fisherman encountered an analogous but much more disturbing situation at a celebrated vacation locale. He presumed he’d hooked a fish but was left recoiling in revulsion upon observing what he had actually retrieved from the deep.

The man, whose name was not given, was attempting to catch something at La Termica breakwater in Malaga, Spain, when he experienced a nasty shock. Instead of a fish, he hauled in a massive rat.

The rodent had latched onto the hook as the fisherman was arranging another rod at the barrier, situated at Misericordia Beach, a preferred location for surfcasting.

A sickening video of the event was distributed on social platforms, displaying the rat squirming and waving its tail in an effort to release itself from the hook. The video has already been watched over 500,000 times since last Sunday (September 7).

Social media users reacting to the video disclosed that rodents are often sighted surrounding Malaga’s breakwaters, implying they weren’t particularly surprised at viewing the fisherman accidentally hooking one.

Some voiced sympathy for the animal, while others trivialized the matter by proposing the fisherman had unearthed a novel aquatic type called the “ratfish”.

In statements translated from Spanish, one person remarked: “The breakwaters in Malaga are teeming with rats; angling without one passing by is an ordeal.”

Another commented: “That’s fine bait.”

A third stated: “They’re even below water now.”

Someone else questioned: “What lure did you employ to seize that?”.

However, a compassionate person added: “What a pity, the poor little creature.”
