A wildfire has engulfed the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, destroying the Grand Canyon Lodge and other historic cabins.

Firefighters were battling the Dragon Bravo fire, which was sparked by lightning, when a strong gust of wind pushed the blaze beyond multiple fire lines on Friday (July 11), according to InciWeb, a website for the U.S. government's incident management system.

The fire showed “extreme and volatile” behavior on Saturday (July 12), growing by 500 acres (0.8 square miles), according to a statement from the National Park Service (NPS). The area is experiencing hot, dry and windy conditions, making it difficult for firefighters to fight.
