We all need a luxury breakaway every now and then and one woman has gone viral after her visit to a unique hotel that is inside a prison.

In the heart of Oxford lies an old Victorian prison which has been converted into a stunning boutique hotel. The 20th century building housed inmates until 1996, but now it is known as Malmaison Oxford.

When open, the prison was severely overcrowded, with up to three people living in a cell built for one. Oxford Castle and Prison states that inmates had access to just one bath or shower and one change of clothes per week.

They were limited opportunities for education and did barely any exercise. The prison struggled like this for years before getting shut down.

Now, it is a tourist attraction, where you can spend the night in a converted cell. Lifestyle content creator Amrit Bilkhu shared what it is really like to stay in the old prison, which some have dubbed “haunted”.

Amrit described the spot as “the coolest hotel ever”. It is also often used as a filming location for TV shows and films.

In a video shared on her TikTok page, she said: “I can now officially say I’ve been to prison. This is Malmaison hotel in Oxford and it is quite literally a prison.”

She showed her walking to her cell block and entering her room which had a a classic cell door with a peep hole. “It was so cool from start to finish,” the hotel lover said. She also loved a cupboard which is fitted with lockers, and noticed the original windows have been kept in the cells.

In the bathroom area there is a huge bath and shower, and Amrit was impressed by the “unreal” room service menu. The hotel is also just a short walk to Oxford town centre.

Amrit added: “We had such a nice experience, I would definately recommend checking this hotel out.”
