‘I teased fish with bait – but regretted it when monster showed up’

Fisherman Dean Silvester was teasing a group of fish with a chunk of bait out on the ocean – but was stunned when a giant “sea monster” emerged.

A fisherman got the shock of his life after he had a close encounter with a “sea monster” from the depths of the ocean in a viral video.

Dean Silvester, from Queensland, Australia, has been fishing for more than 35 years — sharing his adventures out at sea on his social media. The bloke, who boasts more than 135,000 followers, has caught some whoppers in his time — including barramundis and Giant Trevallys, which can grow up to 6ft in length.

But recently he came into contact with another huge beast. In a video, which has gained more than 3.3million likes, he was seen teasing a school of Giant Trevallys with a chunk of bait on his line.

The Giant Trevally is a large, powerful fish found in tropical waters, especially around reefs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is known for its speed and strength. It eats a variety of prey, including smaller fish, squid, and crustaceans.

They are often seen near the water’s surface, where they aggressively hunt bait or lures. As opportunistic predators, they track prey above water and swiftly strike when it touches the surface. They are also drawn to areas with strong currents.

The water was so clear that viewers could see the frenzy going on below, gradually capturing the attention of bigger predators. Suddenly, an even bigger fish emerged from the water, clasping it’s jaws around Dean’s fishing line.

“Fun until this monster showed up,” he wrote over the clip, before adding in the caption: “Was teasing some Giant Trevally until this actual GIANT of the ocean turned up!”

The ocean beast was believed to be a Goliath Grouper, a large, slow-moving fish that lives in warm, coastal waters, mainly in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. It can grow over 8 feet long and weigh up to 800 pounds.

These groupers are known for their broad bodies and powerful jaws, and they feed on fish, crustaceans, and octopuses. They’re often found near coral reefs and shipwrecks. Due to overfishing, they are a protected species in many areas.

TikTok users were left stunned by the encounter — branding it a “monster” in the comments. One user said: “Omg that was insane I can’t get over how big these fish are,” while another added: “Excuse me? What sea monster did you lure up from the depths?!”

A third commented: “GREAT GOOGILY MOOGILY.” Someone else added: “Groupers scare the s**t out of me. I didn’t even know Goliath groupers exist.”

Others wondered why a Goliath Grouper would be seen close to the surface of the water as they believed the creatures were “bottom feeders”. But they are typically found in shallow tropical waters among coral and artificial reefs.

Its range includes the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Keys in the United States, the Bahamas, most of the Caribbean, and most of the Brazilian coast.
