“I worked in Tesco – customers go crazy when you ask for ID”

A former Tesco worker has taken to Reddit to share the 'craziest' ID methods customers have used to prove their age – and some of them are seriously hilarious.

A former Tesco employee has revealed the 'weirdest' IDs shoppers have come across when asked to prove their age.

It is known that ID may be required when purchasing age-restricted items such as energy drinks, alcohol or tobacco in supermarkets, and a driver's license is often the most common choice due to its availability. However, in a Reddit post, a former employee shared that some people, without traditional ID, will “try anything under the sun,” even using a beard as proof of age.

A user named Iron-5141 asked other Reddit users about the “unusual methods” they’ve encountered from buyers. Iron-5141 titled his post “The craziest form of ID you’ve ever been given or tried to get” and wrote, “So I don’t work here anymore, but when I did, people with no ID tried every possible way.”

A former Tesco worker highlighted his most memorable experiences: “My most memorable ones are: 1. Someone showing me a child as ID. 2. Someone showing me car keys as ID. 3. Someone saying 'come on mate, I have a beard' as ID. 4. Being told to trust them as ID. What unique forms of identification have you encountered?”

The Reddit thread, posted on Wednesday, February 19, has since garnered 218 upvotes and nearly 150 comments. One user added: “Someone showed me their Wikipedia page, I don't doubt them but I'm not taking the risk.”

This is the most popular comment, with 116 votes. One respondent called the “unusual” form of “ID” “brilliant.”

Another user, sharing his own experience, said: “Someone showed me a death certificate. For the record, it's not a photo ID.”

A third shared a joke: “One person tried to show me that he had a Facebook account and was convinced that it was a perfectly acceptable form of identification.”

Official IDs usually contain a person's full name, date of birth, address, and a photo, like a driver's license or passport. Another story came from a fourth user: “All from the same guy asking for a vape, in this order: “I'm a year older than you!” “Sorry, I don't recognize you.” “But I have my own car keys!” You have to be 17 to drive, so that's not an argument.

“I literally have a tattoo!” How many times do I have to say this? (One of his friends): “I'm going to buy him one!” Nooooo.”

Someone else shared that they tried to use their tattoo as an ID. They said: “I tried to use my tattoo when I was banned from buying ibuprofen. To be honest, I had a huge headache and was desperate…”

Recalling the moment they realised their age, one user said: “Another user recalled a time when they were asked for ID and felt how old they were: “I was in Asda and they asked me for ID for something. My bag was on the floor so I knelt down to get my wallet. She glanced at my bald head and said: “Oh, never mind.”
