A severe heat wave is forecast to sweep across the central and eastern United States, with millions of residents facing potentially record levels of extreme heat.

Temperatures and humidity will increase as much of the country is trapped under a “heat dome,” the Associated Press reports. A heat dome forms when a high-pressure area in the atmosphere traps warm air underneath it, like putting a lid on a saucepan.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that “extremely dangerous” heat levels are expected over the weekend and into next week as sunny days, light winds and a lack of overnight cooling worsen high temperatures.
