A frequent flyer has revealed the ‘non-negotiable’ rules all plane passengers should follow – including why shoes are crucial.
A seasoned traveller has shared the ‘unwritten rules’ of flying which they believe should be followed by all.
The frequent flyer outlined five key rules which, if followed, should make sure everyone onboard has a more pleasant flight. Taking to Reddit, they even settled the long-standing “armrest debate” and revealed whether you should take your shoes off on a plane.
“Experienced and considerate flyers know them instinctively,” the said. “Inexperienced or rude flyers may not be aware or care about them. Here are some I thought of to start, let me know yours.”
Firstly, they stated: “The middle seat gets both armrests,” and went on to claim: “The window seat controls the shade”.
To maintain a fresh atmosphere in the cabin’s confined space, the third rule insists passengers keep shoes on, especially if you have bare feet underneath. They added: “Keep your stinky feet on the floor regardless of whether your shoes are on or off.”
The traveller humorously suggested passengers should “take a shower at least a week before you fly” though it is recommended to bathe more regularly than that.

The final piece of advice was to stick to your assigned seat, noting that technically, this is actually a written rule. While many Reddit users commended the traveller for their guidance, others chimed in with additional suggestions, such as avoiding bringing odorous food onboard.
One commented: “Don’t bring smelly food. We all love devilled eggs, but do not pack them for your in-flight snack.”

Another user chimed in with their own set of air travel etiquette rules: “No speakerphone or FaceTime calls at any time while on board the airplane. If the person sitting next to you is not providing at least 20 per cent of the conversation, they really didn’t want to have one. Broad shoulders does not mean elbows not touching your sides when seated. If you know you pee a lot, pick an aisle seat.”
Meanwhile, a third traveller shared their frustration: “Stand up and get out of the way when a seatmate needs to use the restroom. I had to ask a guy to get up as he scooted back into his seat and wanted me to climb over him.”
