Retrieving the mail is not always a pleasant activity – frequently, one only encounters invoices demanding settlement or promotions attempting to entice you to part with your money. Outside of celebrations like birthdays and the festive season, it is uncommon for something to arrive that genuinely makes your day better.
Nevertheless, one Reddit contributor came across something quite unusual when collecting their mail. Writing on the online platform, they reported that an individual had deposited £76 ($100) in currency inside their mailbox, without any indication of who did it or why. “On Sunday, my partner checked our mailbox (which is attached to our residence) for the first time in some time and discovered two $50 bills simply sitting there,” they stated.

“There was no envelope, no message, nothing at all. We were extremely puzzled. We have two children and secure employment, and we haven’t experienced any kind of financial difficulties recently, so it seems improbable that someone we know left it as a spontaneous act of generosity.
“We contacted close friends and family members, and everyone denied responsibility. I also posted on a local Facebook group asking if anyone had misplaced a sum of money. There were plenty of encouraging comments, but no clues, and nobody claimed it as theirs.
“Initially, I questioned whether it was a Facebook Marketplace oversight (perhaps someone left payment in the wrong mailbox after collecting an item from a neighbor), but we investigated and have ruled that out. So now I’m perplexed.

“Should I simply retain it? Donate it to a worthy cause? Continue searching for the rightful owner? What course of action would you take in this situation?”.

The most favored suggestion advised they should “just keep it and use it”. “The ‘rightful owner’ is now you,” they remarked. “Someone intentionally placed the money in your mailbox.”

Responding to that suggestion, another user penned: “Exactly. It’s yours to utilize as you wish.
“If you feel uneasy about accepting it because you are not in need, locate a worthy charity to donate to. If you’re in the US, I suggest contributing to a local food bank at this time.
“However, there is also no disgrace in keeping it and allocating it towards your own needs. Do whatever you wish with that money that provides you with the greatest enjoyment or contentment.”
Another individual proposed a potentially more alarming reason for the money, as reported by the Mirror. “It’s probably some young person paying somebody for marijuana or something and they simply left it in the incorrect mailbox,” they commented.
A separate user replied: “That was another thought that occurred to me. Someone in the locality may be involved in drug dealing, and one of their patrons mistakenly left their payment in the wrong mailbox.”
Others suggested taking the money to a financial institution to ascertain its authenticity before deciding what to do with it.
