Looking through the mail isn’t always a pleasant experience – very often, you only find bills demanding payment or adverts trying to encourage you to spend your money. Besides birthdays and Christmas, it’s rare for something to arrive which truly cheers you up.

However, one Reddit member encountered something quite strange when retrieving their mail. Writing on the social media platform, they mentioned someone had placed £76 ($100) in paper money inside their letterbox, with no indication as to who left it or the motive behind it. “On Sunday, my husband checked our mailbox (it’s connected to our house) for the first time in a while and found two $50 bills just sitting there,” they said.

“No envelope, no letter, nothing. We felt totally perplexed. We have two children and steady jobs, and we haven’t experienced any financial difficulties lately, so it seems unlikely someone we know left it as a spontaneous act of kindness.

“We messaged close friends and family, everyone denied it being them. I also posted on a local Facebook group inquiring if anyone was missing a sum of money. Lots of supportive remarks, but no clues, no one claiming it belonged to them.

“Initially I wondered if it was a Facebook Marketplace mistake (like perhaps someone left payment in the wrong letterbox after collecting an item from a neighbor), but we investigated and that’s been ruled out. So now I’m unsure what to do.

“Should I just keep it? Give back to the community in some way? Continue searching for the rightful owner? What action would you take in this situation?”.

The most popular suggestion advised that they should “simply keep it and spend it”. “The ‘rightful owner’ is now you,” they stated. “Someone intentionally put the money in your letterbox.”

Answering that suggestion, another user posted: “Precisely. It’s yours to utilize as you wish.

“If you feel bad for taking it since you’re not in need, find a worthwhile cause to contribute to. If you’re in the US, I advise contributing to a local food bank currently.

“But there is equally no shame in retaining it and allocating it towards your own needs. Do anything you want with that money that provides you with the most pleasure or satisfaction.”

Another individual offered a potentially more concerning explanation for the money, reports the Mirror. “Maybe some teenager is paying someone for cannabis or something, and they simply left it in the incorrect letterbox,” they suggested.

Another user replied: “That was also a thought that occurred to me. Someone in the neighborhood could be a drug supplier, and one of their clients left their money in the wrong mailbox.”

Others suggested taking the money to a financial institution to confirm whether it is genuine or not before deciding what to do with it.
