Scientists have estimated how much of the vast deep ocean floor has been explored, and it's a surprisingly small percentage.
Only 0.001 percent of the deep seafloor (everything below 200 meters, or 656 feet) has been explored, despite the fact that the area takes up about two-thirds of the Earth's surface, an area roughly the size of Rhode Island, according to a new study published May 7 in the journal Science Advances.
“There’s still a lot of unknowns in our ocean,” said Ian Miller, chief science and innovation officer at the National Geographic Society, which supported the research. Miller was not involved in the paper.
