Sesame seeds take about three to four months to mature before harvesting. The seeds are then sorted, packaged, and shipped to stores for use in cooking or baking.
However, after a viral TikTok video showing the stages of harvesting sesame seeds, users began sharing their surprise en masse. Many admitted that they had never thought about this process.
In a popular video, a blogger nicknamed “The Salad Lord” first showed the strange plant and then explained its purpose.

“Can you guess what this is?” the author asked, demonstrating the plant in a video. The frame showed a fleshy stem covered in miniature green capsules.
The video then shows someone cutting one of the capsules with scissors, carefully opening it and extracting the seeds. “That’s how you get sesame seeds,” the man explained, demonstrating the result. “I bet you didn’t know that.”
Sesame grows on tall stalks that are planted in warm, sunny soil with good drainage. After flowering, the pods dry out and split open, revealing the seeds. To harvest, the stalks are shaken to extract the seeds.
After harvesting, the grains are further dried to extend their shelf life, then hermetically packaged.
The optimal conditions for sesame are a hot climate, so the leaders in export are Myanmar and India. However, with a long warm summer, it can be grown even in the UK.
The crop requires temperatures above 10 °C (50 °F), so it is recommended to plant it after spring frosts. For protection, use greenhouses or containers that retain heat.
Viewers of the video admitted that the process of harvesting sesame seeds was a revelation for them. “Now I feel like an unenlightened adult,” wrote one user. Another commented: “My worldview has changed today.”
“Unbelievable! I would never have guessed. These pods look like okra,” added a third.
Some jokingly suggested that the seeds were taken “from bakeries.” “So they don't grow right on burger buns?” the comedian asked.
