Should we pause AI development if an 8.8-megaquake makes the Klyuchevskoy volcano eruption worse? (Image credit: Rory McNicol for Live Science/Alexander Pyragis) Jump to:
In science news this week: A mega-earthquake measuring 8.8 has struck off the coast of Russia. The powerful quake, the sixth largest ever recorded, struck the sparsely populated Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's far east on Wednesday.
Shortly after the earthquake, a volcano on the same peninsula began erupting. Klyuchevskoy had been active for weeks, and the earthquake likely intensified the eruption, causing lava to flow and an ash column at least 2.5 kilometers high.
The powerful earthquake also triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean, but many were later cancelled because the waves were not as big as initially expected.
