Scientists can tell if a volcano is about to erupt by the brightness of the foliage of trees in its vicinity: a richer green color may indicate an impending eruption.

Previously, these subtle changes in color could only be detected from the Earth's surface, but researchers have recently developed a method for observing them from space.

A new collaboration between NASA and the Smithsonian Institution could be a “game changer” when it comes to detecting the first signs of an eruption, volcanologists said in a NASA press release earlier this month. These clues could help protect local communities from the severe impacts of volcanic eruptions, including lava flows, rock ejecta, ash fallout, landslides, and toxic gas clouds.
