In the United States, approximately 90,000 tons of nuclear waste are stored in various containers and structures at more than 100 sites in 39 states.

For years, the country has been trying to move this waste to one safe place.

A 1987 federal law designated Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a permanent nuclear waste repository — but political and legal obstacles delayed construction. Just as work on the site was getting underway, Congress cut off funding for the project entirely in 2011.
