There are 63 national parks in the United States, each renowned for its stunning scenery, impressive geology, and often unique ecosystems.

National parks are areas of land protected by the federal government and managed by the National Park Service (NPS). These places are accessible to the general public, and were visited by about 90 million people in 2023, according to data.

The first national park in the United States, which was also the first national park on the planet, was established by an act of Congress in 1872. Although state parks and preserves had existed before, this park was much larger and was considered one of the crown jewels of America by the federal government.

Over the next hundred years, successive U.S. administrations created many more national parks. Many were established on confiscated Native lands, and questions are now being raised about returning these lands to the people who originally lived and worked on them.
