A couple were astonished upon probing mysterious scratching sounds coming from within their walls. Maddie Neale and her fiancé, Nemo, initially disregarded the noise because it was infrequent, but it rapidly evolved into a constant, daily bother.

In time, the disruption extended throughout the entire house. The pair do not yet share a home; the scratching happens at Nemo’s residence, where he lives with flatmates.

Speaking to Newsweek, Maddie explained: “We initially thought it was a bird or squirrel because of the scratching and the way we could hear it moving, but we were definitely mistaken.”

Resolved to unravel the enigma, the couple acted. Using an existing opening in the wall from a prior repair, they successfully inserted a phone and used the camera’s light to investigate the cause of the commotion.

The video recording exhibits the wall’s interior structure and insulating material. In the recording, Maddie directs the camera towards the right-hand side of the wall’s backing for a thorough view, before rotating to the left.

Maddie posted the footage to TikTok, with superimposed text saying: “hearing something scratching the walls for months so we check”. In the video’s caption, she simply wrote: “Case closed bruh”.

In a matter of days, the TikTok video had accumulated over 24 million views, 2.4 million likes, and nearly 5,000 comments from social media users eager to contribute their thoughts.

One person joked: “That raccoon was like ‘thank god, I thought there was an animal in here'”.

Another inquired: “But the insulation moved? Are there multiple raccoons?”

A third agreed: “this is what I went to the comments for because I’m pretty sure the first thing she was looking at was one??? it moooved!!”

A fourth posited: “Maybe it’s a mom raccoon, oftentimes they’ll sneak themselves into attic spaces to give birth”.

However, someone else disagreed, stating: “I don’t think the insulation moved, if you look closer I’m pretty sure it’s the angle of her camera that makes it look like it moved when she stepped back.”

Another TikTok user quipped: “he’s like nice to finally meet you I’ve heard you too”.

Maddie told Newsweek: “We were obviously both shocked and had to show his other two roommates. It was funny for a little bit, but obviously more funny to me because I don’t live there.”

Despite the issue remaining unresolved – and the raccoon having raided Nemo’s closet while he was away, helping itself to pistachios and cough drops – the residents have opted not to pursue the matter any further.

Nemo has resorted to using adhesive tape to close any gaps in his closets, but otherwise, they’ve decided to accept the noise. Nemo is scheduled to graduate from university in May and intends to leave the property at that time.
