Monday's Google Doodle is dedicated to World Quantum Day, which is celebrated on April 14.
The animated artwork features a thaumatrope, or optical illusion, where the discs have different images on the front and back that, when rotated on separate red threads, form the word “Google.”
“The doodle illustrates the principle of superposition, one of the fundamental principles that makes quantum computing possible,” the search engine's home page says.
“The date April 14 corresponds to the first three digits of Planck's constant, which describes the relationship between the energy and frequency of an energy quantum (for example, a photon): 4.14×10−15 eV.”
World Quantum Physics Day is an initiative aimed at “raising awareness and understanding of quantum science and technology worldwide,” according to the official World Quantum Physics Day website.
