Secret Gmail Update Will Soon Change Your Personal Inbox Forever

Rumor has it that Google is developing a new secret feature that will make your email address even more secure.

If you're tired of the daily barrage of spam, junk mail, and junk email, help may be on the way. Google is apparently about to unveil a new Gmail update that will make your personal email address significantly more secure and less accessible to spammers.

Called Shielded Email, the update generates a unique, disposable address that's linked to your primary email address. You can use it to sign up for new services or fill out forms, so random companies never learn your real address. That should mean you'll see a noticeable reduction in the amount of junk mail in your inbox.

Of course, there may be situations where you need to provide a company with your real email address, but if you're simply signing up for a new app or entering a one-time contest, this new feature could be the perfect solution.

You'll still receive messages forwarded from the new email address to your primary address, but if a company starts sending you spam, it'll be much easier to disable that unique address without affecting your primary account.

Apple already offers a similar feature for iCloud users called Hide My Email that accomplishes the same task, so it's nice to see Google finally joining the bandwagon by releasing its own anti-spam version.

“When you create a new account in an app or on a website, sign up for an online newsletter, or want to email someone you don’t know well, you can use Hide My Email directly from Safari or iCloud settings to create a unique, random email address,” Apple explains about its service.

“If you want, you can update your randomly generated email address to create a new one. Once you choose an address, it becomes unique to you. You will be able to read and reply to emails sent to this address, while your personal email address will remain private.”

The Gmail update was first spotted by the Android Authority team in screenshots showing what the secure email feature will look like in Settings.

Google isn't revealing a release date at this time, but the feature is apparently in testing and may arrive in your Gmail inbox soon.
