Sky has announced a free update that solves one of the biggest problems with TV streaming.
It's no secret that Sky is keen to attract more users to streaming rather than watching TV via outdated satellite dishes. A quick trip to the company's website reveals plenty of deals on devices like Sky Glass and Sky Stream, while deals on the old Sky Q box are almost impossible to find.
Of course, streaming TV has its advantages, as there is no complicated installation, no need to mount a bulky dish on the roof, and everything can be set up without calling an engineer or wandering around the house.
Once you receive the device, you simply plug it in, enter the Wi-Fi password, and within minutes you can be enjoying live and on-demand content.
Thousands of UK drivers have been warned to check their emails immediately for a worrying message from the DVLA
Switching to streaming offers many benefits, but there is one major drawback that particularly irks sports fans.
As you may have noticed if you've ever watched shows on platforms like iPlayer, streaming is typically about 30-40 seconds behind regular over-the-air signals.
This means that when a Premier League goal is scored, streaming device owners may not find out until a minute later.
It’s a nuisance, but Sky is starting to fix it. Earlier this year, the company promised to speed up its streams, and it appears to be keeping its word. Owners of Sky streaming devices, including Sky Glass TVs, can now tune into a new low-latency sports channel that cuts lag by an impressive 22 seconds.
Check your Sky TV box now or risk missing out on even more popular channels this month
Once this channel is activated, sports fans will have a virtually identical experience to watching through an antenna or dish.
This update starts with Sky Sports' main event, but other channels are expected to follow in the future.
Want to try?
To access the brand new low latency sports channel, you can:
• Press the Live Sync button on a Sky Sports main event
• Tune to a special channel in the TV program – 921 for HD clients and 922 for UHD clients
• You can also use voice search by saying “Sky Sports Main Event Low Latency” or “Sky Sports Main Event Live Sync”.
If that update has made streaming TV more appealing, Sky has just launched its big Black Friday sale, which includes a range of deals, such as the Sky Stream box at its lowest price ever.
This means you can subscribe and watch TV for just £19 a month.
