A total solar eclipse can be even more spectacular than viewing the northern lights, but it will be a considerable time before North Americans can see a total solar eclipse without having to travel overseas.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes directly between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on the planet and temporarily turning day into night for a short time. To enjoy this magnificent event, you need to be in the right place at the right time with ideal weather conditions.

The last total solar eclipse occurred on April 8, 2024, when millions of people in Mexico, the United States, and Canada witnessed the spectacular cosmic show. The next eclipse is just around the corner, although it will not be visible from North America.

Total Solar Eclipse 2026

On August 12, 2026, the sun, moon, and Earth will align to create a total solar eclipse that will be visible over western Iceland, northern Spain, and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean. The path of totality will also include largely uninhabited areas of eastern Greenland.

Residents of much of Western and Northern Europe, weather permitting, will be able to witness a spectacular partial solar eclipse that will occur shortly before sunset.

A partial solar eclipse will also be visible in Canada, Alaska and the northeastern United States, although it will not be as spectacular as the spectacle that will unfold over Europe.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US?

It will be nearly a decade before a total solar eclipse is visible from the United States again. The next one will occur in northern Alaska on March 30, 2033. However, the next eclipse visible from the lower 48 states will not be until August 23, 2044.

The next eclipse similar to the one that occurred on August 21, 2017, will occur in a year – on August 12, 2045. It will be possible to observe it from California to Florida.
