Archaeologists have reported the discovery of 5,000-year-old remains believed to belong to a noblewoman from an ancient Peruvian civilization.
The tomb was discovered in Aspero, a district of Caral in Peru that was previously used as a municipal dump, Reuters reports.
Archaeologist David Palomino told Reuters that the preservation of the woman's skin, hair and nails suggested she had “high status” in the ancient Caral civilization.
“This is a significant burial because it contains elements typical of a high-status woman,” Palomino said.
According to preliminary estimates, the woman died at the age of 20 to 35 years.

However, researchers do not have an exact date for the burial.
The remains were found with a mantle made of blue and brown feathers believed to belong to an Amazonian bird.
According to Reuters, Palomino said the tomb was surrounded by baskets of offerings, vases, pumpkins and a toucan's beak.
He added that the discovery demonstrated that “not only men but also women played an important role in this civilization.”

The population of Karala is estimated to have been around 3,000.

According to Reuters, Caral was inhabited at the same time as the ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Sumerian civilizations.
