On Saturday, a man was apprehended at Shannon Airport in Ireland after allegedly scaling the wing of a U.S. military aircraft and assaulting it with a hatchet, according to reports from the region.
The Irish police force, known as Gardaí, stated that a man in his 40s trespassed into a restricted zone of the airport in County Clare and was taken into custody shortly before 11 a.m. on suspicion of causing criminal damage. Gardaí indicated that the investigation is ongoing.
The aircraft in question was identified as a U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules transport plane that was situated on a distant taxiway, as reported by the Irish news outlet The Journal.
Footage disseminated online appeared to capture a man in dark attire traversing the aircraft’s wing during the event. He moved across the wing in proximity to the engines and the main body of the plane.

This security lapse reignites concerns regarding the safety measures at Shannon Airport, which has recently encountered several instances of unauthorized entry into secure areas.
A representative for Shannon Airport confirmed that airport operations were temporarily suspended following the security breach.
“Airport activities were halted around 9:50 a.m. and recommenced at 10:15 a.m.,” stated the spokesperson.
The brief halt in operations resulted in minor disruptions, including delays for two outbound flights and one inbound aircraft that was kept in a holding pattern before its landing shortly after 10:20 a.m., according to The Journal.
Emergency services, encompassing airport security, Gardaí, and personnel from the Irish Defence Forces, were dispatched to the scene, The Journal reported. Armed officers and specialized units were also mobilized.
Officials conducted a thorough inspection of the airport’s perimeter to ascertain how the suspect managed to access the restricted zone.

According to The Journal, this event represents the most recent in a series of security breaches that have occurred at Shannon Airport.
In November, three individuals were apprehended after a van bypassed airport security and entered a restricted zone. In May, another vehicle penetrated the perimeter fence, necessitating a temporary operational shutdown. A few weeks later, three women were arrested on allegations of accessing the airfield and causing damage to an aircraft.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether Saturday’s incident is connected to these previous breaches.

Shannon Airport has been the site of frequent demonstrations against war for many years due to its utilization by the U.S. military, a practice that dates back to the period of the Iraq War.
