One passenger shared his frustration over an unexpected situation with his checked baggage, which prompted many responses from other users.
In a thread on Reddit's r/delta titled “My luggage was rejected due to underweight,” a user explained that large souvenirs from their trip couldn't fit into any of their bags.
So “I put them in a special travel bag that I always carry with me in case of unforeseen circumstances and tried to hand it in,” the author of the post said.
“Imagine my surprise when the agent told me I couldn't check in my fluffy bag because it wasn't heavy enough,” he said.
“Is this really such a weird baggage claim counter?” one user asked.

“The agent advised me to consider taking it as a third carry-on, but I didn't want the gate agent to bother me,” he added.
The passenger did not want to be forced to check his backpack at the gate and ended up finding several “heavy items” in his carry-on baggage, which increased the overall weight.
“Has this happened to anyone else?” asked a Reddit user. “What do you think causes this?”
The panelists began to exchange opinions about whether they had ever encountered baggage being rejected due to “insufficient weight” and offered their guesses about the possible reasons for such a refusal.

“Perhaps the bag was too light and flexible to pass through the sorting machines and various conveyors before reaching the baggage check line,” one participant suggested.
Another Reddit user noted: “It could easily get blown off a conveyor belt or cart.”
One commenter said: “I would just check my carry-on and take the souvenirs with me.”
Another participant added: “Security has become very strict lately… Trying to sneak three obvious bags past them probably won't work.”

“Are you testing helium balloons?” one participant joked.
Another Reddit user noted, “Checking at the gate usually results in less baggage damage. The unknown airport mazes are where the problems arise.”
Most airlines list the maximum weight of checked baggage on their websites, but do not say whether there is a minimum weight limit.
Delta's website lists the cost for the first and second “standard checked bag up to 50 pounds.”
According to Frontier's website, bags “must weigh no more than 40 pounds.”
