A bride from the United Kingdom has been struggling with depression and has been unable to work for nearly two years following an incident where her vindictive sister-in-law doused her in black paint. This assault occurred just moments before she was to walk down the aisle to marry her childhood sweetheart, culminating a retaliatory act amidst an ongoing dispute.

Gemma Monk, 35, a mother of two, was anticipating her marriage to her now-husband, Ken Monk, in May 2024. As she was walking with her father on a cream-colored carpet at the Maidstone, England venue, someone called her name. Within seconds, she was covered in black paint, as she recounted to Kent Online in an article published on Friday.

Upon recognizing the assailant as her sister-in-law, Antonia Eastwood, who is wed to Gemma’s elder brother, Ashley, Gemma attempted to grab her by the hair, but Eastwood managed to escape. The bride was left devastated and in tears.

Gemma Monk had black paint thrown on her shortly before her May 2024 wedding in England by her sister-in-law as part of a continuing feud. A judge sentenced Antonia Eastwood to a 10-month prison term, with 12 months suspended, indicating she will be eligible for parole. (Cover Images)

“This has profoundly affected my life,” Monk shared with Kent Online on Wednesday, following Eastwood’s sentencing by a British court for two counts of criminal damage. “Even while I was giving my statement at the police station, I became overwhelmingly emotional and began crying as I discussed the event.

“Since the incident, if it weren’t for my children or my family, I doubt I would have the strength to even leave my bed to attend to my own needs,” she elaborated. “I’ve lost all my self-respect and my positive routines. I no longer recognize the person I used to be. This has transformed what should have been the most wonderful day of my life into the most horrific memory—one that I, and my entire family, will never forget.”

The assault transpired after Monk had experienced significant weight loss during a period of concern over cancer. Although she has since received a clear health diagnosis, Monk stated that her sister-in-law was aware of her medical ordeal at the time but “still chose to jeopardize the most significant day of my life and put me in danger.”

Eastwood, 49, had been prohibited from attending the wedding due to a dispute that originated from her own marriage ceremony, during which Monk was accused of “attempting to cause Eastwood to stumble.”

In court, Eastwood received a 10-month prison sentence, deferred for 12 months. Additionally, she was mandated to complete 160 hours of community service.

“This was intended to be a joyous occasion for Gemma Monk and her family. Because of your actions, it devolved into a dreadful experience,” stated Judge Oliver Saxby to Eastwood prior to delivering the sentence.

Eastwood’s husband, Ashley, was formerly Ken Monk’s closest friend and was the one who introduced him to Gemma when she was just 14 years old.

Notwithstanding the attack, Gemma managed to remove the paint from her face and body in the dressing room and borrowed a gown from an usher so that she could proceed with marrying her partner of over two decades.

“We had anticipated that day for such a long time. Nothing was going to deter me,” she remarked. “I didn’t hesitate; I would have walked down the aisle in my undergarments with black paint smeared on my face if necessary.”

However, Monk, employed in mental health services, has subsequently suffered from depression and has been unable to work. In a declaration to the court, she conveyed that the incident altered her perspective on life and “led me to question if I had committed a serious wrongdoing, if I had done something incorrect.”

The couple also postponed a planned honeymoon to the Maldives because Gemma “was not feeling up to it.”

“I had a strong premonition—a sense that something was amiss—when I exited the car with my father,” Monk recalled. “But he reassured me it was likely just pre-wedding jitters.”

“I will never accept her apology,” she concluded. “I felt the sentence was insufficient. She ought to have received a minimum of 23 months, considering the protracted wait we endured for this case to reach court.”
