An etiquette expert and author of a new book on good manners is sparking a lot of online discussion about the proper way to eat bananas and other popular hand-held foods.

William Hanson is the author of Simply Good Manners: A Practical Guide to Politeness, Charm, Grace, and Etiquette, released May 27.

Hanson is the chief executive of London-based The English Manner, “the leading institute of etiquette and protocol” in the UK, according to its website.

He has also gained a large audience through his etiquette videos on social media, with more than 6 million followers combined on Instagram and TikTok.

In a recent video, Hanson shared “the only way you should eat a banana.”

“No, we don't pick it up and clean it like primates,” Hanson said in the video, declining an interview.

“Instead, we use a knife and fork. First, starting at one end, we cut it off, then we cut the other end, turning the knife on its side. Then we make cuts in the skin, peel it off, and eat it like that.”

The video shows him eating a piece of banana with a fork.

It has garnered over 200,000 views and over 28,000 comments.

“I'm not doing extra dishes for a banana, William,” one user commented.

“Enough, William! Time out!” wrote another commenter.

“Bro, you've insulted all of humanity,” another person complained.

He has similar videos on how to properly eat grapes, rice, and peas.

But what is considered sophisticated in England may seem strange in the United States.

In America, it's perfectly normal to eat a banana with your hands, another etiquette expert told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

“Other countries certainly have different customs, but most often you won't be offered a whole banana with the peel on in a formal setting,” Diane Gottsman, founder and owner of the Texas School of Protocol in San Antonio, told Fox News Digital.

Gottsman described Hanson as a “wonderful person” and noted that it is perfectly acceptable to eat a banana with your hands.

“It's rare that you'll be served a whole banana at a formal event,” she added.

“The best advice is to watch the owner and use the same technique.”
