KitKat is seeking the public’s assistance after a substantial amount of the company’s chocolate was pilfered, leading to the creation of a new tracking tool to help locate the missing consignment.

The brand, under the Nestlé umbrella, disclosed the theft in a statement issued on March 28.

The confectionary giant reported that 413,793 bars vanished while in transit from a production facility in central Italy, en route to Poland for distribution throughout Europe.

“We’ve always advocated for people to take a moment to enjoy a KitKat, but it appears some individuals interpreted the message quite literally and absconded with over 12 tons of our chocolate,” a representative for KitKat commented at the time.

The spokesperson further remarked that while the company does “recognize the criminals’ discerning palate,” the cargo theft underscores a growing concern impacting businesses of all scales.

“With increasingly sophisticated schemes being implemented regularly, we have decided to make our situation public in the hope of raising awareness about an ever-prevalent criminal trend,” the statement continued.

On Wednesday, which coincidentally fell on April Fools’ Day, the company unveiled a tool enabling customers to verify if their KitKat bars are connected to the theft.

“Indeed, 12 tons of KitKats were stolen. And we are very keen to discover their whereabouts,” the company stated in a post on X.

“Therefore, we have developed a Stolen KitKat Tracker, allowing you to check if your KitKat originates from the missing batch.”

Some individuals on social media speculated that the announcement might be a marketing ploy related to April Fools’ Day.

“Is this entirely for promotional purposes?” one user inquired.

KitKat addressed the skepticism, reaffirming that the theft is genuine and currently under investigation.

“Regrettably, it is true!” KitKat replied. “A whole truckload of KitKats from a new product line disappeared in transit last week. We are working with the authorities on this matter.”

“I sincerely hope the stolen KitKat tracker is a genuine tool and not an April Fools’ jest,” another X user expressed.

“It sounds rather unbelievable… and while we appreciate a clever ‘break’ pun, this is entirely authentic,” the confectionery giant responded.

There is no indication that consumers in the U.S. have been affected, as the stolen shipment was destined for European markets, according to the company.

Consumers are encouraged to visit KitKat’s online tracking tool to examine their products.
