A man decides to use a WWII bomb that ruined his barbecue to cool his beer.
Ross Miller was mowing his lawn on Saturday when he found the casing of a 1940s bomb weighing a whopping 11kg.
The previous owners of the house had mentioned to Ross something metal buried in the garden, but they believed it was part of a pipeline.
Upon further examination, Ross noticed a primer that closely resembled a bullet, and also found the date “1940” on the shell.
Concerned for the safety of his nine-year-old daughter Hannah, he decided to call emergency services.
West Mercia Police advised him to keep his distance and send any photos he took.
Shortly afterwards they set up a 100 metre cordon around the area and closed off a street in Pateley, Herefordshire.
The cordon was lifted several hours later after an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) unit arrived with a dog trained to detect explosives.
“After about two hours of waiting, an EOD guy came up and said, ‘Yes, that’s a 25-pounder,’” Ross said.
They confirmed that there were no explosives left inside the shell, after which they cleaned it and returned it to Ross as a unique souvenir.
