A rock collector recently made a lucky discovery while exploring a state park in Arkansas.

On April 21, Minnesota resident David DeCook found a magnificent 3.81-carat brown diamond in Crater of Diamonds State Park.

The diamond was the largest ever found in the park in 2025, according to the Arkansas State Parks Department.

A government agency press release said Decook was in the park with his family when he discovered the gem.

“DeCook walked to the spot where he had spotted the diamond, picked it up, and examined it carefully before calling his brother over,” the press release said. “Invoking the natural sibling rivalry, David told Derek, 'Oh, you're going to be mad when you see what I found!'”

The Minnesota man returned to the park a few days later to register his diamond.

DeCook decided to name his find “Duke's Diamond” after his dog.

“You never know what you'll find. This is the chance of a lifetime.”

DeCook identified himself as a farmer to FOX 9 in Minneapolis and told the outlet that the diamond “looks like a candy wrapper.”

“It’s very shiny, like a Werther candy wrapper… If you get closer to it, it becomes obvious that it’s a diamond,” he noted.

DeCook added: “I was very surprised and never thought I would find something so big.”

“You never know what you'll find. This is the chance of a lifetime.”

The Arkansas State Parks Department also noted that there was heavy rain in the area after DeCook found the gem, a good sign for diamond hunters.

“April turned out to be a very wet month in the park, with over 12 inches of rain,” said Assistant Park Superintendent Waymon Cox.

“Many of the park's largest diamonds are found on the surface,” he added.

“When it rains in the area, it washes away the dirt and exposes the heavy rocks, minerals and diamonds that are close to the surface.”

The Duke Diamond is the largest find at Crater of Diamonds State Park since a French tourist found a 7.46-carat diamond in January 2024.

Tourist Julien Navas named the gemstone after his fiancee Karine.
