Nantucket could be considered the quintessential locale for summertime getaways highlighting coastal New England allure, however, fresh statistics indicate that the famously scenic island, found just off the Massachusetts shoreline, does encounter some challenges.
Current assessments of wastewater indicate, again, that the concentration of cocaine present in sewage has notably exceeded the nationwide average from July 2025 through February 2026.
Specifically, during October, amounts peaked at 2,948.70 nanograms for each liter, while the nationwide average stayed under 1,000.
Reportedly, another surge reached 2,815.50 nanograms for each liter on Nantucket in December, whereas the national average rested just above 1,000, according to identical assessments.
Fox News Digital contacted officials from the town of Nantucket for their feedback, and the town referenced its publicly accessible database containing pertinent data. “Nantucket, like many communities across the nation, is affected by the escalating health crisis involving substance misuse and overdoses,” the town’s website recognized.

“Given a seasonal increase in population that can quadruple during the summer months, the town grapples with the unique obstacle of addressing behavioral health concerns while operating within the constraints of consistent yet finite resources,” it also stated.
Approximately 40,000 tourists visited the island daily during July and August in both 2021 and 2022 — with peak attendance reaching over 60,000 on certain days, according to Cape and Islands, a local publication.

Identical analyses identified lower-than-average quantities of fentanyl, a highly lethal synthetic opioid implicated in numerous overdose events across the country.

“During COVID, a substantial number of communities decided that it was crucial to commence water analysis to detect any upticks in COVID cases within the region,” Randolph Rice, a Maryland-based lawyer and legal commentator, previously informed Fox News Digital.
“However, as of the summer’s onset, Nantucket has opted to extend its testing to encompass additional substances, notably drugs, nicotine, and associated materials… within the system. Current findings indicate a considerable presence of cocaine,” Rice further commented.

Nantucket, well-regarded for its numerous attractions, draws in famous individuals, affluent people — and billionaires.
As FOX Business reported recently, Bill Belichick, former coach for the New England Patriots, finalized the sale of his Nantucket property in August for $4 million.
According to various sources, former President Joe Biden and his relatives frequently visit the island to observe Thanksgiving annually with family members.
