A Utah driver spent part of the weekend in the hospital after hitting a turkey on the interstate, sending it flying through his windshield.

The Garland Fire Department shared the story on its Facebook page on Saturday.

“At high speeds on the interstate, you can encounter a variety of hazards, including turkeys. Yes, you heard that right,” the department said.

The driver, whose identity is being kept secret, was driving north on Interstate 15 on Saturday when the turkey decided to cross the road.

The impact sent the turkey flying through the car's windshield. Photos provided by the fire department show the windshield shattered and feathers scattered around the driver's seat inside the car.

Although the turkey did not survive, the driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in good spirits.

“This is a great reminder of the importance of being cautious around animals while traveling,” the department said. “The Garland Fire Department has reported several accidents involving wildlife, including elk and deer, on this stretch of interstate. As warmer weather approaches, we expect to see an increase in these incidents.”
