When the box was brought in for a standard appraisal, an expensive diamond brooch was discovered hidden in plain sight in the plain jewellery box.

Most items were valued just above $270.

However, the brooch turned out to be a real find in the Art Deco style, which was later sold at auction for about $3,100, SWNS news agency reports.

“This brilliant diamond is surrounded by approximately 1.80 carats of equally stunning old and single cut diamonds,” she added.

“It's always a special moment when you can surprise someone with an unexpected price tag,” Spence said, “and this was no exception.”

When the brooch was eventually sold at auction in Litchfield, it sold for over $3,100, making it a deal that was not only
